ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING : 9th JANUARY '99

You'll not want to miss it! The Society's last AGM for the 20th Century will be held at 3pm on Saturday 9th January at Mountpottinger Methodist Church. At it Office-Bearers will be elected, plans for the ensuing year revealed, and an opportunity provided for discussion about any aspect of the Society's affairs of concern to you or others present. Afternoon Tea is also on the agenda.

DEBTS TO SETTLE?

At the moment about 20 annual subscriptions for the current year have not yet been paid - representing a total sum of around £350.00 If yours happens to be one of them (it's a quite understandable oversight) please delay no longer! The Honorary Treasurer's address is shown below, cheques should be made payable to USOC, and the amount due is £17.50 (students £10.00; overseas members £5.00).

ORGAN VACANCY

At Cooke Centenary Presbyterian Church, Ormeau Road, Belfast, where they have a four-part robed choir, a three-manual organ (probably the largest and loudest within Ulster Presbyterianism), two Sunday services, and require one organist/choirmaster to cope with the other three. Further details from Revd J Campbell, 01232 642981.

ORGANISTS' REVIEW

If your subscription has lapsed or if you have never been a subscriber this is the time to consider the matter. The leaflet enclosed gives details of a special introductory offer and it should also be noted that as a member of USOC you are entitled to a £5.00 discount on the regular annual subscription.

This is a truly excellent publication with informative articles on new organs, organ music, organ technique, and on the work of the church organist; its comprehensive reviews of organ and choral recordings and of new organ and choral music are particularly valuable. Highly recommended!

ARMAGH ON RECORD

A new recording of the organ at St Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Armagh has just been made by George Minne, organist at the cathedral for almost forty years. His twin-disc production covers four centuries of mainly French and Belgian organ music though fine performances of two major Bach works are also included.

Priced at £15.99 the CD is obtainable from Koinonia (Pottinger's Entry) and at the HMV Record Shop (Castle Place), or can be ordered from Joris Minne, 70 Greer Park Drive, Belfast, BT8 7YQ, with no charge for mailing. Somebody's Christmas present?

SOUTH OF THE BORDER

On 12th June next year a trip to Tullamore and Mullingar is under consideration but we need to have your views about how it should be organised, so please complete the reply-slip provided and return to me not later than 31st December. Accommodation at the hotel can be held for only a limited period so a decision about this event needs to be made soon. The next circular will specify the mode of transport agreed and include a reservation form.

Mullingar's massive cathedral houses what is probably the largest Compton on the island, recently restored by J W Walker (see John Norman's article in OR, May '98); Tullamore Parish Church possess Ireland's only Frobenius organ on which Shane Brennan (exhibiting "abundant vitality") has made a recently issued CD (reviewed in OR, August '98). If the two-day option is implemented other venues may also be included.

MAY MEMO

To date 25 members have enlisted for our weekend trip to York. That leaves a maximum of 13 places still available so if you intend to participate please let me have your reply pronto.

That's all for '98. My best wishes to you for Christmas & the New Year.
